Method
Preparing the Dough
- In a mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warmed milk, pumpkin puree, melted butter, maple syrup, and sugar. Whisk until smooth.
- Gradually add the flour, salt, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
Shaping the Rolls
- On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle, about ¼ inch thick.
- Spread a layer of softened butter over the dough. Sprinkle generously with cinnamon, sugar, and any additional spices if desired.
- Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice into 12-15 rolls.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover with a cloth, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, until puffy.
Baking the Rolls
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, whip together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and maple syrup until smooth.
- Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool slightly before generously spreading the maple cream cheese frosting over the top.
Notes
Use fresh ingredients and keep an eye on baking time to prevent overbaking. These rolls can be made ahead of time and frozen for later use.
