Ingredients

Burger Components
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend) Choose beef with about 20% fat content for juiciness.
  • 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese Use for melting on the patties.
  • 4 pieces burger buns Sturdy brioche or ciabatta rolls work best.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For caramelizing onions.
  • Salt and pepper to taste For seasoning patties.
  • 1 cup beef broth Optional for serving.
Caramelized Onions
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced Use yellow or sweet onions for best sweetness.

Method

Caramelize the Onions
  1. In a skillet, heat butter over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 25-30 minutes until golden brown and soft. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.
Prepare the Patties
  1. While the onions cook, form the ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season each side with salt and pepper.
Cook the Patties
  1. Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, adding cheese slices in the last minute to melt.
Assemble the Burgers
  1. Toast your burger buns lightly. Layer the patty with melted cheese, top with a generous portion of caramelized onions, and drizzle with a little beef broth if desired.
Serve
  1. Serve immediately with your choice of sides, and enjoy the delightful blend of flavors.

Notes

Don’t rush the onions; caramelizing takes time for the deep, sweet flavor. Experiment with toppings like sautéed mushrooms for a twist.
