Preparation
- Rinse 2 cups of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Cook the rice according to package instructions and mix with 1/4 cup rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt. Let cool.
Assembling the Roll
- Lay a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and place a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on the mat.
- Wet your hands to prevent sticking and grab a handful of sushi rice. Evenly spread a thin layer over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.
- Spoon crab (or imitation crab) in a line along the center, followed by slices of avocado and cucumber.
- Using the mat, start rolling the sushi away from you, applying gentle pressure while keeping the roll tight. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.
- With a sharp, wet knife, cut the roll into 6-8 pieces, wiping the knife with a damp cloth between cuts for cleaner slices.
- If desired, coat the top of the California Crunch Roll with tempura flakes for a crispy finish.
Notes
For best results, use short-grain sushi rice and wet your hands frequently to avoid sticking. Enjoy with soy sauce and wasabi for an authentic experience.
